Location

Discovering the area

The Resort is located on the promontory of the Torre San Giovanni countryside, a marina lined with white beaches and Caribbean-coloured sea; a perfect location to relax and enjoy the beauty of the area.

Torre San Giovanni is Ugento's main marina and is located on the Ionian coast that leads from Gallipoli to Santa Maria di Leuca.

In a few years it has been transformed from a small fishing village into a lively seaside spot with a tourist vocation, among the most frequented in southern Salento.

In summer this small town surrounded by pine forests hosts numerous tourists attracted by the unparalleled beauty of its sea.

The name of this locality is due to the presence of a tower built in 1563 that originally served to guard this stretch of coast from attacks by foreign forces.

In the same area, the remains of the Roman port of Auxentum (active during the 4th-2nd centuries B.C. as a military port) have come to light.

In any case, its history is as old as the town of Ugento and in fact, in addition to the Roman port, the remains of Messapian walls from the 6th century B.C. have also been found here, hinting at the importance of this port in supplying Ozan (Ugento), what was perhaps the most important Messapian centre ever.

The Fontanelle coastline is rich in stories that tell of its famous shallows, frequent from Torre Pali to Torre Mozza and up to three kilometres from the coast, to which, according to legend, a large part of Pyrrhus' fleet was shipwrecked.

Valuable evidence that the stretch of coastline was heavily frequented by ships sailing to the East is provided by the numerous ancient shipwrecks and amphora shards found on its seabed.

The stretch of coastline at Fontanelle is characterised by kilometres of fine white sand hemmed in by striking dunes and covered with rich wild vegetation typical of Mediterranean coastal areas.

The crystal-clear sea takes on infinite shades from light green to the deepest blue, typical of tropical landscapes to which the beaches of the Salento have nothing to envy in terms of beauty.

The basins, pine forest, maquis and delicate sand dunes that characterise Fontanelle constitute an ecological complex of great botanical, faunal and landscape interest that attracts thousands of tourists every year.
